A timber deck lives or dies by the frame under it. The frame has to be built from properly treated timber, sit clear of the ground on solid supports, and have air moving underneath it. A frame laid straight onto soil rots from below while the boards on top still look fine.
So we build the frame on concrete pads or posts, keep it ventilated, and set the joist spacing to suit the boards, closer where boards are thinner or laid diagonally. Any timber we cut on site gets end-grain preservative, because the treated timber you buy is only treated to the depth it was cut at the mill.
Boards are laid with a consistent gap so water drains through and the timber can move, because timber does move with the seasons. We fix with stainless or coated screws, not nails, so boards can be lifted later if one needs replacing. And a deck wants a slight fall so water runs off rather than lying in pools.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:
- Deck area and the height it sits at, since a raised deck needs a heavier frame and often a balustrade
- Timber grade and board profile
- Ground conditions and how much levelling the supports need
- Steps, balustrade and any built-in seating
- Access for materials
Timber decking wants re-oiling every year or two. If you would rather not, price composite alongside it before deciding.
