Potholes form where water gets into a crack, sits, freezes and lifts the surface, and traffic then breaks the loosened material out. Because water is the cause, the sides of a pothole are always undercut and weakened well beyond the visible hole.

That is why tipping material into the hole does not work. The repair is only bonded to broken edges, and the first frost takes it back out. We saw or cut the hole out square, back to sound material, clean out the debris, tack the edges so the repair bonds, then lay and compact in layers finishing flush with the surrounding surface.

Where a road or yard has potholes appearing in numbers rather than in isolated spots, that is a sign the surface has come to the end of its life and water is getting in generally. Patching that indefinitely costs more over a few years than dressing or resurfacing it once, and we would tell you so rather than keep coming back.

Why do my potholes keep coming back?

Because they were filled rather than cut out. A repair bonded only to broken, undercut edges lifts with the first frost. Cut square, tacked and compacted, it holds.

Can you repair potholes in winter?

Yes, though cold and wet conditions make a lasting repair harder, and a hole full of water cannot be repaired properly at all. If it is urgent we will do a temporary repair and come back to do it properly when the weather allows, and we will be clear about which one you are getting.
