Most of the complaints about artificial grass come down to the base. Grass laid over old turf, or over a base that was not properly compacted, ends up with dips and lumps within a season, because the ground underneath is still settling and rotting down.
So we treat it like a surfacing job. The turf comes off, a compacted stone base goes down, a laying course of grit sand is screeded level, and a weed membrane goes in. The base is free-draining throughout, because water has to get through the grass, through the base and away. Where the ground underneath is heavy clay, we deal with the drainage first.
Seams are the other giveaway. We plan the layout so seams fall where you will not be looking, keep the pile direction consistent across every piece (grass laid with the pile running two ways looks like two different colours), and join with jointing tape and adhesive rather than pegs. Edges are secured to a timber or composite edging so the grass cannot creep.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:
- Area, and how many cuts and seams the shape needs
- The grass specification, which is the widest variable
- How much excavation and cart away the existing ground needs
- Whether drainage work is needed under the base
- Access for barrowing stone in and turf out

Pile height, colour and density vary a lot. We bring samples, since most look better in a brochure than in daylight.

Turf off, stone base laid and compacted, laying course screeded level.

Lay and join
Grass rolled out, left to settle, cut in, and seamed with the pile all running the same way.

Secure and brush
Edges fixed, infill brushed in, and the pile brushed up.
