Tarmac is the most cost effective way to surface a large area well. It goes down quickly, takes traffic almost immediately, and gives a clean uniform finish that suits a long drive or a yard better than a patterned surface would.

We lay it as a base course and a separate wearing course rather than one thick layer, rolling each while it is still hot. Edges are the weak point on any tarmac drive, so open edges are either restrained with an edging or the tarmac is taken up to a haunch. Unsupported tarmac crumbles from the edge inwards.

Tarmac is not permeable. On a new driveway that means the surface water has to be dealt with, either by falling to a border or soakaway on your own land, or through a drainage channel. We design that in at the quote stage rather than leaving it as a surprise.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Area, which is where tarmac saves money against block paving
Whether a paving machine can get on site or the tarmac has to be hand laid
Depth of the sub-base, which is greater for a farm or commercial entrance
Drainage work needed, because the surface is not permeable
Whether you want a red or coloured wearing course rather than standard black

Larger areas cost less per square metre, so if you are thinking about a drive and a turning area, it is usually worth pricing them together.

How soon can I drive on new tarmac?

Usually the next day. Avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary for the first few weeks, and keep sharp jack or trailer legs off it, because fresh tarmac scuffs while it is still hardening.

Will tarmac soften in hot weather?

It goes slightly softer on the hottest days, which is normal and reverses as it cools. Point loads are what leave a mark, so a motorbike stand or a caravan jockey wheel wants a spreader plate under it in a heatwave.

Can you tarmac over my old drive?

Sometimes, if the existing base is sound and the levels allow it without blocking a damp course or a threshold. If the old surface is already cracked and moving, overlaying it just brings the cracks up into the new layer, and we will say so.
