Before you replace a driveway, it is worth finding out what is under the dirt. Block paving that reads green and grey is usually sound underneath, and a proper clean brings the original colour back.

We clean with a rotary flat surface cleaner rather than a hand lance wherever we can. A lance in the wrong hands leaves tiger stripes across the surface and blows the jointing sand out unevenly. The rotary head keeps the pressure consistent, so the finish is even across the whole drive.

Cleaning takes the jointing sand out, so re-sanding is part of the job rather than an extra. If you want to hold the finish for longer we can seal afterwards, which slows staining and weed growth and keeps the joints firm. Sealing needs a dry surface and a dry forecast, so it is usually a second visit.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Area, and how much of it is detail work around edges and planting
How heavy the moss and algae growth is
Whether there is oil staining, which needs separate treatment and does not always fully lift
Kiln dried or polymeric jointing sand
Whether you want sealing, priced separately because it is a second visit

We will tell you honestly what will and will not lift before you book. Old oil that has soaked deep into a concrete block may never come out completely.

Will cleaning damage my blocks?

Not at the right pressure with the right head. Damage comes from holding a narrow lance jet too close, which erodes the face of the block and leaves stripes. That is why we use a rotary cleaner across open areas.

Will the weeds come back?

Some will, because they seed in from above. Full joints slow it down a lot, polymeric sand slows it further, and sealing slows it further again. Nothing stops it permanently.

Can you get oil stains out?

Often we can lighten them a long way, sometimes remove them. Old oil that has soaked deep into a concrete block may never come out completely. We will tell you what we think before you pay for it.
