The first conversation about a new patio is usually about size and position, not paving. A patio that only catches the sun at nine in the morning does not get used, and a patio too narrow to pull a chair back from the table does not either. We would rather talk that through on site before anyone picks a slab.
On material, the honest summary is this. Porcelain is dimensionally consistent, absorbs almost nothing, and stays clean the longest, but it costs more and takes longer to cut. Natural stone (sandstone, limestone, granite) has variation and character, and each slab is slightly different in thickness, so it takes longer to lay well. Concrete paving is the most affordable and has come a long way in appearance.
Whatever you choose, the construction is the same: a compacted base, full mortar beds, falls away from the house, and jointing suited to the paving. Porcelain needs a slurry primer on the back of every slab, which is a step that gets skipped and is why some porcelain patios lift.

What’s included
What you get for the price
The quote covers the base, the full mortar beds, the cutting and the pointing. Porcelain also gets a slurry primer on the back of every slab, which is the step that tends to get skipped.
- Excavation, cart away and a compacted stone sub-base
- Full mortar bed under every slab, with a slurry primer under porcelain
- Falls set away from the house and clear of the damp proof course
- On-site cutting around returns, manholes and planting
- Joints pointed and the surface washed down
What affects the price
Why we quote per job
There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:
- Area and the number of cuts the shape demands
- The paving range, which is the widest single variable on a patio
- Whether the ground needs digging out or building up to reach your level
- Access for barrowing materials in and spoil out
- Any steps, edging or walling forming part of the same job
Size is worth settling before material. A patio a metre short on each side is the thing people regret, and the extra area usually costs less than changing the paving.
How it works
New Patios, step by step
- 01
Talk it through on site
Where the sun falls, how you want to use it, and what size actually works with furniture on it.
- 02
Choose the paving
We bring samples out and show you the colour wet as well as dry, because most paving darkens noticeably in the rain.
- 03
Excavate and base
Dig out to depth, cart away, lay and compact the stone base.
- 04
Lay on full beds
Every slab on a full bed, primed where the paving needs it, set to line and to fall.
- 05
Point, wash and clear
Joints pointed, surface washed down, and the site left clear.
Why us
Why people pick us for this
The base is specified
Our written quote names the sub-base depth and the materials, so you can see what is going under the surface and compare quotes on the same terms.
A fixed price
The written price is what you pay. If something genuinely unforeseen turns up once we open the ground, we stop and talk to you before doing anything about it.
You deal with the person doing the work
No sales visit followed by a different crew. The person who quotes the job is on site doing it.
Straight advice
If the job you have asked for is not the right answer, or a clean would do instead of a replacement, we will tell you before you spend the money.
