Gravel has two real advantages. It is the cheapest surface per square metre by a clear margin, and it drains through itself, so it rarely raises a surface water question. It is also noisy to walk on, which some people want and some people do not.

The usual complaint about gravel is that it moves: it migrates to the edges, goes thin where the tyres run, and ends up on the pavement. That is a construction problem, not a gravel problem. We lay it over a compacted stone base and a geotextile membrane so the stone cannot work down into the ground, and we restrain every edge.

Where a drive slopes, or where cars turn tightly, we lay a cellular stabilising grid and fill the cells with gravel. The grid holds the stone in place, so the surface stays even, it is comfortable to walk on, and the gravel stops ending up in the road. On a sloping drive we would always recommend it.

How do I stop gravel getting everywhere?

Restrained edges, the correct depth (too deep is worse than too shallow) and angular rather than rounded stone. On any slope, a cellular grid is what actually solves it, because the stone sits in cells instead of rolling.

Is gravel hard to walk on?

Loose gravel is, especially in heels or with a pram. Gravel laid into a stabilising grid is noticeably firmer underfoot, because the surface cannot shift under your weight.
