The thing that catches people out on a car park is water. A large sealed surface generates a lot of run-off in a downpour, and it has to go somewhere that is not the neighbouring property or the public highway. So drainage gets designed first: falls to gullies or channels, sized for the area, taken to a proper outlet.

Construction depth is set by what uses the site. A staff car park taking cars is one thing; a yard that also takes delivery lorries needs considerably more under it, particularly where lorries turn, because turning loads do far more damage than straight running.

We build new car parks, resurface tired ones, and surface dress those where the base is still sound. Bay marking, disabled bays, directional arrows and hatching are part of the same job. We will also say plainly if a resurface is throwing good money at a failed base.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

Area, and the construction depth the vehicle mix demands
Drainage, which on a large impermeable area is a significant share of the cost
Whether the existing base can be kept, resurfaced or has to be rebuilt
Phasing and out of hours working to keep the site operating
The marking schedule, including bays, hatching and disabled provision

Keeping the site open is priced in from the start rather than discovered halfway. Phasing extends the programme, and it is usually cheaper than closing the premises.

Can you keep the car park open while you work?

Usually, by phasing it so part of the site is always available. It extends the programme and costs more than closing it, so we price it that way from the start rather than discovering it halfway through.

Do I need drainage consent?

For a new or substantially enlarged car park, quite possibly, because you are creating run-off that has to be dealt with lawfully. It depends on the area and where the water goes. We will flag it at the quote stage so it is not a surprise.

How long does bay marking last?

A few years on a car park with normal turnover, less where vehicles turn tightly on the lines. It is a quick job to refresh, and worth doing before the bays get faint enough that people stop parking to them.
