Block paving is the most popular driveway finish around Worksop, and for good reason. It comes in a wide range of colours and formats, it can be laid in patterns that suit anything from a new build to a period frontage, and if a service ever needs digging up, the blocks lift out and go back down with no visible repair.

The finish is only as good as what sits under it. Blocks are laid on a screeded sand bed over a compacted stone sub-base, then vibrated in with a plate compactor and jointed. Every open edge is restrained with an edging haunched in concrete, because blocks with nothing to press against creep outwards and the joints open up.

We joint with kiln dried sand as standard. If you want to hold weed growth and ant activity off for longer, we can joint with a polymeric sand instead, which sets firm once wetted. We will price both if you want to compare them.

There is no useful price per square metre for this, because these change the number more than the material does:

The block range, since a standard concrete block and a tumbled or premium block are very different prices
The pattern, because herringbone and any 45 degree layout need far more cutting than a stretcher bond
How many curves, manholes and awkward returns have to be cut around
Whether you want kiln dried or polymeric jointing sand
Area and excavation depth, as with any driveway

Prepare the base
Excavate, lay and compact the stone sub-base, and set the levels and falls.

Set the edges
Edge courses are laid to line and haunched in concrete so nothing can spread.

Lay and cut
Blocks are laid to pattern off a screeded sand bed, with cuts made to fit the edges and any manhole.

Compact and joint
The surface is vibrated in, jointed with sand, and vibrated again so the joints fill properly.

Will weeds grow through block paving?

Weeds seed into the joints from above rather than growing up through the base. Keeping the joints full and brushing the surface holds most of it off, and polymeric jointing sand cuts it down further because the joint sets firm.

Do block paved drives sink?

They sink when the sub-base was too thin or was not compacted in layers, not because of the blocks. That is why our quotes name the sub-base depth, so you can see what you are paying for under the surface.

Can you match my existing blocks?

Often, if the range is still made. Give us one loose block or send a photo, and we will tell you honestly whether it is a match or the nearest current equivalent.
